Who? Everyone whose gender doesn’t tidily fit into the female/male binary.

What? An online survey asking participants how they describe themselves and how they would like other people to refer to them.

When? July to August 2022.

Identity words

The top five were:

  1. nonbinary: 63.9% (down 4.3%)
  2. queer: 54.6% (up 6.6%)
  3. trans: 38.2% (up 4.7%)
  4. gender non-conforming: 34.5% (up 1.6%)
  5. transgender: 33.9% (up 4.7%)

The top 5 were:

  1. No title at all: 38.6% (up 3.9%)
  2. Mx: 20.1% (down 4.6%)
  3. Mr: 9.4% (up 1.2%)
  4. Non-gendered prof/acad.: 8.4% (up 1.1%)
  5. Ms: 4.4% (down 0.5%)

  4. It – it/it/its/its/itself – 16.2% (up 6.9%)
